Not sure if anyone has looked into this avenue, but Usenet Archives and Google Group archives might be a good place to look for evidence of if this was discussed (I would do, but am currently at work). You can find a lot of old tech news and rumour discussion on there from the 90s and early 2000s which can't be found through the Wayback Machine, and some of it is very localized to specific areas. If it's not on there I wouldn't rule it out completely, as not everything ever discussed in these groups was archived, but you can find some really interesting stuff in there that Google search just... doesn't bring up anymore. Great video overall. If it is real, I wonder if Microsoft higher-ups were embarrassed about the prank and asked bigger news websites to not cover the story.
